The Remake Of The End Of The Greatest RPG Of All Time—or TROTEOTGRPGOAT for short (kind of)—is, indeed, a game that exists. Usually, I’d revisit a vague description like that, but there’s something oddly satisfying about the title itself. It hints at a fully-formed artistic project that teases just enough to grab your attention. Add in the striking visuals from the trailer below, and you’ve got a real head-turner of a game that exists about… well, another game that doesn’t.

Developed by Coin Drop Games, TROTEOTGRPGOAT may sound like an RPG, but it’s more of a puzzle game with a unique premise. You’ll be navigating the final hour of an RPG that never actually existed, solving its many challenges with help from an in-game manual, developer commentary, and a fictional unreleased documentary. There also seems to be a layer of meta-commentary, somewhat The Beginner’s Guide-esque, on how we talk about and experience games.

When a project dives this deep into postmodern layers, there’s always a risk that the original concept’s beauty might get lost in all the deconstruction. But that doesn’t seem to be the case here. The visuals, rich in detail and lushness, evoke something akin to Octopath Traveler. While I’m not sure terms like “HD-2D” or “rotoscopic” apply here, the game certainly looks great! And yes, as a fan of pirate skeletons, I am particularly excited about that aspect—it feels like a game made for someone who enjoys writing about undead pirates.

Coin Drop Games consists of three University of California students, who started the project for a class, and they’ve since enlisted collaborators to help bring it to life. There’s no release date yet, but when TROTEOTGRPGOAT does drop, it’ll be available on both PC and Mac. You can already check out the Steam page for more details.
